D. Directions to the River Farm at Jug Bay
Access to the River Farm area of the Sanctuary by car is limited to special events. Hikers can explore this area on foot, but they must sign in at Wetlands Center first. Please contact the office for access information.
To reach the locked gate at River Farm on Pindell Rd., first you'll need to get almost to the Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary following the above directions.
If coming from Washington or Baltimore, after you turn onto Plummer Lane, continue straight (past Wrighton Road) where Plummer Lane changes name and becomes Pindell Road. (From Annapolis or Calvert County, when you get to the stop sign at Plummer/Pindell turn left onto Pindell Road instead of going straight to the main entrance).
Travel for about 1.3 miles on winding Pindell Road. The road eventually makes a sharp left hand turn (large yellow sign with left-pointing arrow). Immediately after the turn you will see a row of several newspaper/mailboxes on the right.
Turn RIGHT, making a 180 degree hairpin turn onto the Farm Entrance Road. A large brown sign indicates the entrance to River Farm. (Do not turn into white gate at the Jug Bay Preserve.) Proceed through the green gate. Always leave the gate as you find it (open, closed, locked or unlocked).
Continue on the Farm Entrance Rd. You will pass trail heads for the Beech Trail, Pindell Bluff Trail, Upper Railroad Bed Trail and Farm Trail. When the road turns to dirt you will leave the woods and enter an open field. You may park near the large barn or continue to the end of the road. The Sweet Flag Picnic area is at the water's edge (below the small caretaker's house) and the Pindell Bluff Trail begins near the old tobacco barn.
