Virtual Field Trip - Why Are Wetlands Important?

 

 

  • Wetlands are nurseries for fish, like Striped Bass and Yellow Perch who spawn (lay eggs) in wetlands
  •   

 

 

 

 

 

  • Wetlands are home to over 200 kinds of frogs, toads, and salamanders   Here we have a Bullfrog, a Fowler's Toad, and a Spotted Salamander. 

  

 

  

 

 

 

 

 

 

  • Are habitats for one-third of our nation's bird species including this Marsh Wren, Eastern Towhee, and  Song Sparrow. 
  •  

   

 

 

  • Purify water by removing sediment, nutrients, and other pollutants

 

 

  • Contain, acre for acre, as much biological diversity as rainforests

 

 

  • Support nearly 100 plant species at Jug Bay, including Wild Rice.   Also shown are Arrow Arum, Pickerel Weed, and Arrowhead.

 

 

  • Ospreys need wetlands. They build their nest and raise their young in wetlands. They eat fish.
