Vernal Pools: Adopt-A-Pool

Seasonal pools occur throughout our forests. Some pools are naturally occuring true vernal pools, some are borrow pits from the days of gravel mining and railroad construction. Any pool containing an obligate amphibian species has been documented through various research projects over the years. The marbled salamander, spotted salamander, woodfrog, and sporatic breeder spadefoot toad have been observed at the Sanctuary. We even have fairy shrimp appear in some pools.

Volunteers interested in helping document obligate species distribution and abundance can participate in the spring Adopt-a-Pool project. Training sessions are held between March and April each year.

REQUIREMENTS: Visit once every 1-2 weeks, set your own schedule, work with a group or solo. Contact Volunteer Coordinator, Lindsay Hollister for more information at 410-741-9330.
