As a Nationally Important Bird Area, the Sanctuary is a valuable place to conduct bird-related research projects. During the breeding season we conduct a mist netting study for forest songbirds, and in the winter months we conduct a waterbird survey for ducks and raptors of the wetlands.

Ospreys are a common sighting on the Patuxent River in the spring and summer. Check out the Live Osprey Cam in Jug Bay that is operated by Patuxent River Park! (Scroll to the bottom of the linked page to see the live video. Keep in mind that Osprey migrate for the winter so the video is only active in the spring and summer months.)
