Phytoplankton--the microscopic algae on which the entire aquatic food web depends--are also indicators of water quality. We have launched a monitoring study to discover how the Patuxent River's phytoplankton community changes throughout the year in response to changing temperature and light exposure. We're also watching for phytoplankton responses following large storms and increased nutrient loading in the spring. And we're on the lookout for algal blooms, which can rob the water of oxygen and harm fish and other aquatic organisms.
We welcome volunteers to help with this study. Through the microscope, you'll witness a fascinating world of shapes and movement. Training for collecting plankton samples and using the microscope to count and identify plankton species is on a individual basis. To participate in the study, please call the Sanctuary (410) 741-9330 or e-mail Elaine Friebele.
