Field Investigations for Teens
Fee: $15/person
If you have an interest in biology or ecology and enjoy the outdoors, this field investigation program is for you. Learn how scientists study estuarine ecology in the field. Bring a bagged lunch, a change of clothes, a change of shoes, and a towel. Be prepared to get wet and muddy! Registration Form
 

Girls in the Wild
Thursday, Jun 24; 9:00 am – 3:00 pm
Seeking sophisticated teens who admire biologists like Rachel Carson, want to learn about journaling in the outdoors, explore the diversity of habitats at the Sanctuary and don’t mind getting dirty.
 
Fish of the Patuxent
Wednesday, Jul 21; 9:00 am – 3:00 pm
Learn about fish adaptations and ecology. We’ll use seine nets to capture, identify, and then release fish along the shores of Jug Bay. Be prepared to get wet and muddy!

 

Aquatic Ecology
Thursday, Aug 12; 9:00 am – 3:00 pm
We will zoom down to the microscopic level of plankton, the basis of the aquatic food chain. Using tow nets and microscopes, we’ll explore the abundance and diversity of these important, microscopic river dwellers. 
 

Jug Bay Student Leadership Program

Paddling the Patuxent
 
Monday, July 19 – Friday, July 23
Cost:    $200.00 ($180 for FOJB members)
The Jug Bay Student Leadership Program is a five-day (with 3 nights camping) canoeing and kayaking expedition for high-school students. This trip features educational programming, riverside camping, festive meals, and much more. Paddlers enjoy a unique, on-the-water experience that builds a strong stewardship ethic for the river and its natural resources. Campers will become immersed in Patuxent River issues and explore their roles in solving them. Registration is limited to 15 participants who demonstrate an interest in environmental issues of the Chesapeake Bay region.
