How to become a volunteer

Volunteering at Jug Bay is a fun and rewarding way to learn about wetland ecology and help with important projects. No experience is necessary, only enthusiasm for working outdoors. Most activities are not suitable for children under 10.

Talk to a staff member and then meet with the Volunteer Coordinator. Through an informal interview, the Coordinator identifies the prospective volunteer's interests, capabilities, and likes or dislikes. For example, a volunteer who wants to learn more about the Chesapeake Bay watershed and enjoys solitude while walking in the forest might be well-matched to make measurements and collect samples for the Water Quality study. Another who prefers interacting with people and who enjoys water sports and physical activity might become a canoe guide.

The prospective volunteer then selects a research, education, or conservation program, pledging to participate on a regular basis. Volunteers learn about their "jobs" at training workshops held for the program they have chosen. Scheduled several times each year, training sessions provide natural history background, procedures, tips, and Sanctuary policies.
