ug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary
Submerged Aquatic Vegetation (SAV) Survey
SAVs are important to the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries because they:
- provide critical food and shelter for fish and wildlife.
- remove harmful nutrient and sediment pollution from the water
- stabilize sediments and reduce wave energy and erosion
Why do Jug Bay volunteers monitor SAVs?
- Currently, SAVs cover only about 10 percent of their historic acreage in the Chesapeake Bay area. As water quality improves, SAVs are slowly coming back.
- Our survey is part of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation's Bay-wide underwater grasses monitoring program.
For more information about SAVs in general, see http://www.cbf.org/resources/facts/sav.htm
Research Activities
Traveling by canoe, volunteers survey SAV growth at several sites along the Patuxent River at Jug Bay during the summer.
