Jug  Bay  Wetlands  Sanctuary

Limited Access Policy

Four reasons why the sanctuary is not open all the time to the public:

1. This is a sanctuary, not a park.
As a wildlife sanctuary, our main purpose is to protect the wetlands and other habitats, and the wildlife. Our "limited-access policy" ensures the integrity of the Sanctuary's wildlife habitats.
2. Public access is an important management tool.
One way to protect wildlife is to control public access. Too many visitors can inadvertently harm wildlife and habitats. We take our mandate seriously - - to protect these lands and the wildlife that live here.
3. The Sanctuary has a very small staff of part-time and fulltime employees.
Staff are not available 7 days a week, 8 hours a day to greet and orient visitors. On days when we are not open to the public, the staff plans educational programs, analyzes research results, coordinates volunteer programs, repairs hiking trails, conducts workshops and attends meetings or conferences elsewhere. At times, there may be no employees on site when we are not specifically open to the public.
4. Our "limited-access policy" is modeled after the successful policies of the Nature Conservancy and federal Wilderness Area programs.
TNC and other conservation organizations that preserve and protect sensitive and vulnerable natural lands, also limit public access. Backcountry permits are required to enter many National Parks and Wilderness Areas.
