Jug  Bay  Wetlands  Sanctuary

Why Are Wetlands Important?

Osprey landing on the nest

Ospreys need wetlands. They build their nest and raise their young in wetlands. They eat fish.

What is a wetland?...

Wetlands...
  • Are nurseries for fish, like Striped Bass and Yellow Perch, to spawn (lay eggs) in wetlands
  • World-wide are home to over 200 kinds of frogs, toads, and salamanders
  • Are habitats for one-third of our nation's bird species
  • Purify water by removing sediment, nutrients, and other pollutants
  • Contain, acre for acre, as much biological diversity as rainforests
  • Support nearly 100 plant species at Jug Bay, including Wild Rice.
