Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary seeks a summer environmental education intern to co-teach science day camps (ages 10-17) and family programs. The intern will develop curricula, create educational resources and work on an independent project. In addition, interns assist in on-going ecological field studies. 40 hours per week; some weekend and evening hours are required.
The Sanctuary, operated by the Anne Arundel County Department of Recreation and Parks, consists of more than 1400 acres of tidal freshwater wetlands, forests, meadows and fields along the Patuxent River. The Sanctuary is located in southern Anne Arundel County, just 20 miles from both Washington D.C. and Annapolis. The three missions of the Sanctuary are land stewardship, environmental education, and ecological research.
In 1990, the Sanctuary gained national recognition when it was made a component of the Chesapeake Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve System (CBNERR), a NOAA program. The internship is funded by CBNERR. Jug Bay is also recognized as a Nationally Important Bird Area by the American Bird Conservancy and the National Audubon Society. The Sanctuary also serves as a research field station for researchers and university students. The staff provides equipment, logistical assistance, and a wealth of accumulated knowledge for researchers.
