Welcome to the
Friends of Jug Bay
Wetlands Sanctuary |
The Friends was established in 1986 to foster the work of the Sanctuary through financial support and volunteer service.
The two main purposes of the Friends are: 1) to raise and maintain funds to use exclusively in support of the preservation, enhancement, and operation of the Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary; and 2) to foster education and research programs which increase public awareness of, interest in, and appreciation for, the history and ecology of the Jug Bay area, including the adjacent wetlands and the Patuxent River, a major tributary of the Chesapeake Bay. These purposes are consistent with the Sanctuary's missions of environmental education, scientific research, and habitat preservation and restoration.
THE BOARD
The day to day business of the Friends is conducted by a Board of Directors of up to 15 members who are elected at the annual General Membership Meeting, held at the Sanctuary each March. The board is assisted in its work by several committees, composed of voluntary members.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Jug Bay Conservation Award
Each year, at the annual meeting, the Friends recognizes an individual whose active involvement in the Jug Bay area has contributed to a better understanding of its significance and fostered a greater appreciation of this unique ecosystem.
Summer Research Fellows
The Friends provides funds for university students to spend the summer months doing field research under the supervision of the Sanctuary director. This program provides a valuable experience for the students and greatly benefits the Sanctuary.
Sponsorships
The Friends sponsors children who would otherwise be unable to benefit from the educational programs and experiences at the Sanctuary.
Habitat Restoration
Through other grants earned by the Friends, the Sanctuary has been able to actively participate with cooperating organizations in restoring wild rice stands and planting submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) in the marshes of Jug Bay, thereby replenishing these unique components of a healthy ecosystem.
Sanctuary Expansion
The Friends has been very active in working with citizens and local, county, and state officials and agencies to encourage the expansion the Sanctuary's boundaries and thereby enhance the protection offered to the most sensitive areas. The latest successful effort culminated in the addition of the Paris N. Glendening Nature Preserve, a 600 acre property with considerable marsh and river frontage.
Scientific and Educational Equipment
Undoubtedly the most significant fund raising effort ever undertaken by the Friends was in support of the Interactive Wetlands Exhibit project, which resulted in the installation of a modern, hands on set of teaching stations in the McCann Wetland Education Center. This includes modern, computer work stations and excellent graphics and mechanical teaching aids.
FUNDING
The funds to support our work come from the following sources:
- membership dues
- donations
- grants
- fund raisers
- merchandise sales

MATCHING GIFTS
What's better than a generous gift to the Friends of Jug Bay? A gift that is twice as generous thanks to a third party's matching gift program!
Many companies offer employees a matching gift benefit that, in effect, will double (or in some cases even triple) your gift to the Friends. Matching gifts can make a valuable added contribution to our funding and greatly enhance our effectiveness during this time of tight budgets. So when making a gift to the Friends of Jug Bay, please consider earmarking us for a corporate match. Companies have various methods by which you can submit your matching gift request; online forms, automated phone systems or a paper form that you submit to the Friends.
Not sure if your company has a matching gift program? Click here - or contact your company's human resources officer or look at its web site to find out what your options are.
If you are using a paper matching gift form, please send it to us at The Friends of Jug Bay, P.O. Box 6218, Annapolis, MD 21401-0218.
